(TMA, February 20, 2026) — The Addis Ababa Traffic Management Authority (TMA) announced that alongside providing road safety education, numerous engineering projects have been undertaken to protect pedestrians from traffic accidents.
During the first six months of the current fiscal year, the Authority identified high-risk areas with heavy pedestrian traffic and installed 47 bollards to reduce vulnerability to accidents.
Key highlights of the engineering interventions include:
School Zone Safety Improvements: Safety enhancements were implemented at 10 public and private schools located along main roads. These works included painting pedestrian crossings, installing traffic signs, and erecting safety fences.
Accessibility for People with Disabilities: To ensure inclusive road use, 96 square meters of ramps were constructed at pedestrian crossings. Notable locations include:
Fiyel Bet and Figa Road.
Bole (from the Ministry of Mines to Kara).
From Haile Grand to Kara.
Jomo and Lebu routes, among others.
Speed Control Measures: Based on public requests and technical studies, speed bumps and alerts were installed at 100 identified spots across the city where pedestrian traffic is high.
Infrastructure Maintenance: Efforts were also made to rehabilitate existing assets, including repairing pedestrian fences damaged by collisions and repainting bollards and guardrails.
The Authority emphasized that pedestrians suffer the highest rate of injury in traffic accidents. While drivers bear the primary responsibility for safety, pedestrians are urged to use roads properly and cautiously.
Moving forward, the TMA plans to complement its educational and infrastructure work with strict law enforcement, enhanced traffic management measures, and a stronger focus on supporting non-motorized road users.
