Why were the solar panels installed on traffic lights upside down?
👉 The secret of installing solar panels on traffic lights in Addis Ababa has been revealed
April 13, 2018 (Manakheria Radio) The Road Safety Engineering Department responded to a question raised by residents who found that the solar panels installed on various traffic lights in Addis Ababa city appeared to be upside down.
In an explanation given by the institution based on the principle of "Customer is King", it was announced that the panels were not turned upside down by mistake but by modern technology.
According to the department's statement, the installed panels are products of modern technology called bifacial. These panels are different from previous technologies because they are able to generate electricity using light reflected from the ground and the environment in addition to direct sunlight from the front.

This method allows for 10 to 25 percent more energy than conventional one-way collection.
Regarding the installation conditions, the panels are installed at a height of 6 meters from the ground so that light enters them from the back; the angle at which the panels are placed is scientifically calculated to properly collect the returned light.
This will not only increase energy production, but also extend the service life of the panels, the institute explained in detail.
The Road Safety Engineering Department stated that it will continue to respond to public questions; it called on the public to continue to submit similar suggestions and comments.
These panels currently installed are expected to play a major role in managing the traffic flow in the city in a modern way and creating a reliable power supply.
