Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) said that it is necessary to work in a different way to solve the transportation problem in Addis Ababa city. In his explanation at the 36th regular meeting of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister said that it is necessary to work in a different way to solve the transportation problem in Addis Ababa. He said that there are currently about 1.5 million vehicles in Ethiopia, of which more than 355,000 are individual automobiles. He pointed out that this number of automobiles is more than the number of cars that provide mass transportation and are used for commercial purposes. He said that the automobile owners should realize that the fuel that we are spending 4 billion dollars on resources that we don't have is not able to take the fuel to the level where it can serve the majority of the society. In addition to other basic needs in Addis Ababa, they mentioned the need to make a concerted effort to alleviate the very high transportation problem. The Prime Minister added that unless we follow the way that both government and private cars can serve the people, if the fuel that should be bought with subsidies does not reach the people as a national resource, it is against the development that we envision. The Prime Minister said that it is encouraged and desirable for individuals to own a car. Otherwise, if individuals go in singles and pairs, while there is space for three or four people, and people queue for hours, this means a waste of energy and time as a country. Unless we do something to solve this in a different way, in the matter of transportation in our city, even though we spend a lot of money on fuel, the problem is still serious. Recently reviewed by the cabinet, they raised that despite the trials started according to the direction given to the government cars to serve the public at work exits and entrances, it was not enough. He also said that the council should help from this point of view and to serve our people as much as we can, especially the poor need to be prioritized.
