December 18, 2017 In Addis Ababa, the road safety strategy that was in operation to reduce the number of road traffic accidents that claim many lives every year was revised. The strategy has been implemented since 2010 and it has been said that it has been revised in a way that moves with the city and takes changes into consideration. It is said that the #road_safety_strategy, which will be implemented for eight years from 2017 to 2030, aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by road traffic accidents by 25 percent. The Addis Ababa Traffic Management Authority, which announced the road safety strategy, said that the strategy focuses on the city's traffic flow and disaster prevention activities on seven different issues. Kbebew Mideksa, director general of the authority, said that establishing a road traffic safety management system, focusing on the main roads with frequent vehicle collisions, road traffic collision and damage data management, post-response and others will be implemented. Ato Kbebeu, who mentioned that there are changes in the road safety strategy that was being implemented in the past, said that the number of #traffic_accidents, which killed up to 600 people a year, has been reduced. However, he mentioned that around 382 people lose their lives in traffic accidents alone, and the pressure on the economy is still a matter of great concern. He said that the improvements have been made to be compatible with the #corridor_development in the city and to reduce the risk even more and to be suitable for the change of the city. Yabbal Addis, head of the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau, said that the expansion of non-motorized transport and working on mass transport services are the main focus of the city to improve Addis Ababa's road safety and transport services. Ato Yabbal also said that among the works carried out by the city administration, the improvement of the transportation system, road construction, and the purchase of buses for transportation will be allocated a large amount of capital every year. The Road Safety Council, headed by the Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, was established in 2009 and has been implementing a 13-year road safety strategy since 2010. The revised strategy is said to be effective for five years. In addition to the damage caused to people's lives by traffic accidents, it has been said that it has to be worked on with attention as it damages the country's economy by causing massive destruction of property.
