More than 25.2 billion birr fuel payment has been subsidized for public transport

More than 25.2 billion birr have been subsidized for more than 198 thousand vehicles and more than 124.3 billion birr
According to the Public Relations Director of the Oil and Energy Authority, Ms. Bekel Kuma told the Ethiopian Press Organization that since July 2014, since the implementation of the targeted subsidy system, a total of 25 billion 21 million 777 thousand 203 birr has been subsidized for 198 thousand 237 vehicles.
The director said that the previous subsidy system cost the country billions of birr every year. He said the subsidy system was the reason for fuel smuggling.
He also stated that the new subsidy system that is being implemented under the name of “targeted fuel subsidy” is benefiting vehicles that provide public transport services in a different way.
He also mentioned that due to the series of price adjustments made in the past months, the price difference with the neighboring countries has been narrowed to a large extent. Thus, the need to smuggle fuel to neighboring countries
