Training was provided on the application of alcohol breath testing equipment to help control drunk driving. – Addis Ababa Traffic Management Authority, Vital Strategies and Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety, international humanitarian organizations working on road safety Today, awareness training was given to the traffic control experts from eleven branches of the institute on the operation and application of breathalyzers to control drunk driving. Speaking at the opening of the training program, the director-general of the authority, Amare Tareqin, said, “Studies and data show that drunk driving is the second leading cause of traffic accidents in our city after speeding. He pointed out that it is appropriate to use a modern technology-supported breathalyzer to do the control, as it is important to have an awareness-based control to reduce the risk of drunk driving. He said that the provision of training to the experts who use the controls in the appropriate way is a part of this, as it is an on-the-job intervention that helps control the drunken driving and it will help to reduce the risk in a meaningful way. At the conclusion of the training, Director General of the Traffic Management Authority, Kbebew Mideksa, said that the institute will monitor the drivers who violate traffic rules and laws through engineering improvements, road safety awareness education, and to ensure the flow and safety of the city. He explained that drunk driving is a major cause of traffic accidents in the world, at the national level or in Addis Ababa city, so it is important to control this problem and save the lives, bodies and property of citizens. Mr. Kbebeu added that the method of control is to supply materials needed for alcohol breath control, training and deployment in coordination with stakeholders, especially for drunk driving. Finally, the donated Drunk Driving Breathalyzer was handed over by Mr. Daniel Chekol, Country Director of Vital Strategy, and Mr. Kbebewu Mideksa, Director General of the Authority, and the program was completed.
