Addis Ababa | General – -> 1 Comment – -> Ethiopia

AMN – April 09/2016 Addis Ababa City Administration Environmental Protection Authority announced that there are favorable conditions for using electric vehicles in Addis Ababa city. Ato Solomon, the head of the authority's greenhouse gas reduction and green technology expansion team, pointed out that the air pollution in the city is growing year by year, and that the use of electric vehicles is an option to alleviate the problem and that there are favorable conditions for this. In his explanation, Mr. Solomon pointed out that the fact that smoke from old vehicles is currently the main pollutant in the city, and that there are residents who cooperate in helping with the work that has been done as a solution, is one of the issues seen as a favorable condition for the introduction of electric vehicles. He also said that following the fact that Ethiopia is paying special attention to producing electricity in large quantities, other electric vehicle infrastructures including vehicle charging stations are being developed in the city. Ato Solomon added that plans are being made to reduce air pollution by promoting electric vehicles that use renewable energy. He also stated that the rapidly growing number of vehicles is being adapted to environmental safety, so that it does not cause damage to public health and does not have a significant impact on the climate. Mr. Asefa Hadis, Advisor to the Minister of Transportation Services at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, said that gasoline-powered vehicles have high carbon emissions, but electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions significantly, so they are being widely used. According to Mr. Solomon, the number of vehicles in the city is increasing from time to time, especially due to the increase in the number of vehicles using fuel, the air pollution has reached a serious level due to the increase in carbon emissions. They told us that vehicles that have been driven for more than 40, 30, 20 years are making the problem worse. In 2015, the Addis Ababa Driver Vehicle Licensing and Control Authority conducted a study of the city's vehicle data from 2005 to 2014 by the Operational Improvement Study and Project Monitoring Group. According to this study, there are 691 thousand 93 vehicles in the city.
