(Addis Ababa Traffic Management Authority – Meskerem 06, 2019 E.C.): The Addis Ababa Traffic Management Authority has launched a road safety awareness campaign today at Menelik Secondary School. The initiative targets schools across all sub-cities of the capital that have been identified as being at high risk for traffic accidents.

Mr. Barnabas Hailu, Team Leader of the Road Safety Awareness and Capacity Building Directorate—who opened the campaign event—stated that the Authority is working to ensure that traffic flow in the city is orderly and safe.
The institution has strived to prevent traffic accidents, particularly in school zones, by providing road safety education to students and the school community and by annually training and deploying student traffic police assistants. The team leader stated that the objective of the road traffic safety awareness campaign is to enable students—alongside their regular academic studies—to gain an understanding of road safety and thereby protect themselves and the school community from traffic accidents.

He further noted that a continuous awareness-raising program would be implemented by visiting schools across all 11 sub-cities that are vulnerable to traffic accidents; this will involve conducting face-to-face educational sessions and distributing printed materials on road safety.
Professionals from the central and branch offices, traffic police officers, youth traffic volunteers, student traffic assistants, students, and teachers participated in the program.
