A five-year road safety strategy was announced in Addis Ababa on December 17, 2017 (Arada FM). It is said that it has set a goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 25 percent. It was also stated that seven main areas of focus have been prepared to achieve the goal. Establishing a road traffic safety management system, focusing on the main roads with high traffic conflicts, giving first, second and third priority to pedestrians, implementing key safety laws supported by awareness, road traffic collision and damage data management, post-accident response and compiling and expanding best practices are stated. Head of the Addis Ababa City Administration's Transport Bureau, Ato Yabbal, said that one of the administration's key areas of focus is to improve the transport system, ensuring that there is a safe, accessible and affordable means of movement for all residents. The official said that huge investments are allocated every year for road construction, public service bus procurement, traffic management and non-motorized transport services. He said that using walking and cycling has made a significant contribution to the development of culture, as well as reducing polluting gas emissions and improving the health of the community. In order to maintain road safety, it has been shown that the existence of the road safety council established at the city-wide level as well as the leading agency leading the sector plays a typical role in improving road safety.
